Manual Therapy

At the PTA Center Stuttgart Manual Therapy is one of the most important forms of Physical Therapy. It is a passive technique used to examine joints and structures surrounding the joints for disorders or dysfunctions. The consideration of biomechanics plays an important role here.

A detailed diagnosis is an elementary part of Manual Therapy. It is the foundation of a targeted, effective treatment.

Which dysfunctions could occur?

Hypomobility

Restricted joint mobility, for example due to muscle shortening or capsule changes, e.g. arthrosis (this is also referred to as capsule pattern, which in arthrosis describes the changed joint position of each joint)

Hypermobility

Increased joint mobility, for example due to weakness or insufficiency of the capsule-ligament apparatus, or due to intervertebral disc degeneration

Special tests can be used to find out which structure (joint, muscle, ligament) possibly causes pain or triggers other symptoms.

In what situations is Manual Therapy used?

  • Restricted joint mobility, e.g. after immobilization with a plaster cast or after an injury
  • Maintenance of the existing joint mobility
  • Pain relief
  • Improvement of the joint metabolism

For which symptoms does Manual Therapy provide relief?

  • Back pain
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint blockades
  • Arthrosis

Example:
Twisting trauma (supination trauma) while hiking

The ankle is swollen and painful, but there is no fracture. Manual Therapy can help the swelling to subside more quickly, mobility can be restored promptly and pain can be relieved.

Typical for Manual Therapy is the traction treatment, in which a targeted pull is applied to a joint. This relieves the joint surfaces, joint fluid can replenish itself and the pain is relieved. At the PTA Center, we like to combine Manual Therapy with Massage Therapy to relax the muscles and prepare the patient ideally for the treatment.

Manual Therapy for the temporomandibular joint – CMD

Manual Therapy is also successfully applied to the temporomandibular joint. CMD stands for Cranio-Mandibular Dysfunction and describes a functional disorder in the area of the temporomandibular joint, which can be treated very effectively with Manual Therapy.

Functional disorders in the area of the temporomandibular joint are often one of the causes of complaints of the locomotor system.

In addition to physical therapy, the use of bite splints has proven itself. A bite splint primarily serves to protect the teeth and is very often prescribed in case of teeth grinding.

At the PTA Center we work closely with renowned dentists from the Stuttgart area and accompany patients during and after dental treatments or the insertion of implants. An altered bite due to dental treatment or after the loss of teeth can affect the function of the temporomandibular joint, but also neighbouring joints. This often manifests itself as headaches, neck pain or neck tension.

What can indicate a disturbance in the temporomandibular joint?

  • Restricted mouth opening
  • Grinding/cracking in the jaw joint
  • Pain
  • Feeling of tension in the facial area
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness, ringing in the ears like tinnitus, pressure on the ear
  • Back pain, neck pain/stiffness, limited head rotation
